People of Iraqi Sinjar protest against decision to execute Yezidis youth
ERBIL, Syria (North Press) – On Saturday, dozens of Yazidis demonstrated in Sinjar, north Iraq, to protest against the decision to execute four young Yezidis, issued by Mosul court last week.
The demonstration began on Saturday afternoon, in Sanouneh in Sinjar, in which dozens of residents of the area participated.
Yesterday, hundreds of residents of the region participated in a demonstration started from the city center of Sinjar, and raised slogans calling for the repeal and invalidity of the sentence.
The Yezidi activist, Murad Khalaf Khalti, a resident of the region, said that the demonstration demanded the repeal of the death penalty against the four young men.
Banners were raised at the demonstration, which wrote: “Stop the false accusations. We do not kill anyone. No to the execution. We are peaceful.”
“The Yezidis have been subjected to massacres throughout history, the last of which was in 2014 at the hands of ISIS, but our issues were not focused on, and the perpetrators of the crimes against us were not held accountable,” one of the demonstrators said.
“It is not possible to implement any death penalty in Iraq without the approval of the Presidency of the Republic,” he added.
It is worth mentioning that the President of Iraq has not yet approved the decision, nor any previous decision to execute, except for those related to terrorism cases.
In the fall of 2020, the road between Tel-Aziz and Sinjar in the Iraqi governorate of Nineveh witnessed the killing of two young men from al-Shammar tribe.
Following the incident, the Iraqi security forces arrested four young Yezidis, who were residents of Sinjar, on charges of committing the murder against the two individuals.
On April 21, Mosul court issued a decision to execute the four defendants.
