Exchange companies in Syria’s Damascus either delay remittances or close

DAMASCUS, Syria (north Press)On Thursday, residents of Damascus expressed their dissatisfaction with some internal remittance companies delaying the delivery of their remittances, and others closing their doors.

“Some companies deliberately delay the delivery of remittances for ten days in order to benefit from the fluctuating exchange rate,” an employee of one of the exchange companies in Damascus, who asked not to be named, told North Press.

“Most companies claim the lack of electricity and internet malfunctions to delay the delivery of remittances,” the employee added.

Issam Muhammad (pseudonym) told North Press that he was sent a remittance with a notice from Jordan by WhatsApp “but I could not receive it until about 10 days later.”

While a source of al-Fu’ad Company, al-Fahhama Branch, told North Press that “the delay in the delivery of remittances may be due to the agent and the company itself.”

“The company does not have branches outside Syria, but rather it has agents approved by the Central Bank of Syria as distributors,” the source added.
