Opposition bombs government positions in Syria’s northwest

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, Turkish-backed armed opposition groups bombed positions of the Syrian government forces in the de-escalation zone.

A local source told North Press that the Ansar al-Tawhid group targeted gatherings of the government forces with heavy artillery and BM-21 Grad rockets in Zawiya Mountain, in the southern countryside of Idlib.

Ansar al-Tawhid split from the Jund al-Aqsa group on March 2, 2018, in Sarmin city. It includes about 800 fighters, and is active on the fronts of Zawiya Mountain and less active in the countryside of Hama and Aleppo.

The targeting of the front lines resulted in direct causalities in the ranks of the government forces.

On Wednesday, government forces renewed their attacks on the positions and fortifications of the armed groups in the southern and eastern countryside of Idlib.

Local sources told North Press that government forces launched surface-to-surface missiles at the sites of the opposition groups in the villages and towns of al-Fatir and Majdlia, in the eastern and southern Idlib.

The government forces targeted the village of San, located in the eastern countryside of Idlib, with heavy artillery and rocket launchers, reporting no causalities, the source added.
