Local mayor assassinated in Syria’s eastern Daraa countryside

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, unknown armed individuals assassinated the mayor of the town of Nahtah, in the eastern countryside of Daraa, southern Syria.

Local sources told North Press that Mamdouh al-Mafa’lani, the mayor of Nahtah, was shot by unknown gunmen in front of his house in the town of Nahtah in the eastern countryside of Daraa.

During 2020, two mayors were killed in Daraa Governorate, the heads of municipalities of Ayb and Sanamayn.

In early 2021, the head of Jasim municipality was assassinated in the northern countryside of Daraa.

No party has yet claimed responsibility for the assassinations in Daraa.

The city of Daraa is witnessing military confrontations between the government’s Fourth Division forces and anti-government armed groups.

On Tuesday, Russian Military Police threatened to use airstrikes against members of the Central Committee of the armed groups in southern Syria’s Daraa if the Syrian government’s requests to deport six of its leaders to Idlib were not complied with.

Last Thursday, the division brought in large military reinforcements, including tanks, armored vehicles, troop carriers and a large number of elements, and stationed in the suburb of Daraa.
