Dozens of IDPs in Idlib poisoned by tainted Iftar meals

IDPs in ad-hoc camps in Idlib countryside, northwestern Syria, were poisoned for the second day in a row as a result of eating Iftar meals distributed by a charity.

On Tuesday evening, more than 75 IDPs – most of them women, children, and the elderly – from al-Mukhtar camp near the town of Kelli, north of Idlib near the Syrian-Turkish border, were poisoned as a result of eating rotten meals distributed by the Tooba charity operating in the northern Idlib countryside.

On Monday evening, more than 71 IDPs were poisoned in the Childhood Care camp near the town of al-Qah, north of Idlib, after eating Iftar (fast-breaking) meals distributed by the Turkish organization Sham Sharif.

It is noteworthy that the Iftar meals that were distributed to the camp residents were prepared in the same kitchen that Sham Sharif organization worked in in the Childhood Care camp, which is a private kitchen (rented) and not affiliated with either society.

Both organizations have not made any clarifications yet regarding why the meals were tainted.

The patients were taken to hospitals near the camp after suffering from diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Many were released after receiving the necessary medical treatment and stabilization of their situation.

More than 150 cases of poisoning have arrived in the hospital in the past two days due to tainted food, including women, children and the elderly.
