The Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin has told the United States Special Representative for Syria Engagement James Jeffrey that the establishment of the safe zone in northern Syria (the region is also known as East of the Euphrates) would not be completed but through a plan that meets the aspirations of Ankara.

This came during a meeting Kalin held with Jeffrey on Wednesday at the Turkish Presidential Complex in Ankara.

The meeting was focused on the establishment of the safe zone in northern Syria, the road map of Manbij, the formation of the constitutional committee and the achievement of a political solution within the context of the territorial integrity of the Syrian territories.

While the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Wednesday that his country had not reached an agreement with the United States regarding establishing the proposed safe zone in Syria, noting that the US proposals are “not satisfactory” to Turkey.

Cavusoglu stated that Ankara and Washington did not agree on the depth of the safe zone in northern Syria, nor the force that will be in control of it.

“There is no agreement with the United States so far to remove People’s Protection Units (YPG) from the proposed safe zone northern Syria,” he added.

There have been talks over the past three days between the US and Turkey regarding establishing the safe zone along the borders in northeastern Syria.
