Lebanese army foils rocket smuggling from Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Lebanese army on Tuesday announced the seizure of Grad rockets that had been smuggled from Syria into Lebanon, as part of ongoing operations against cross-border smuggling networks.
In a statement, the Lebanese army said a military unit seized 122 mm Grad rockets in the mountainous outskirts of Arsal after they had been smuggled from Syrian territory into Lebanon.
In July, Syria’s Ministry of Interior said it had foiled an attempt to smuggle a large shipment of advanced weapons across the Syrian-Iraqi border. The ministry said the shipment was intended to transit through Syria to Lebanon for Hezbollah.
The army said it also confiscated a vehicle used to transport the rockets and arrested two Lebanese nationals identified as members of the smuggling network.
It added that raids are underway to locate and arrest the remaining members of the network.
The statement said that ammunition and military equipment were seized. The confiscated items were handed over to the relevant authorities, while the two suspects are being investigated under the supervision of the competent judiciary. Efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects are continuing.
