Three drones target Kurdistan Region of Iraq, cause no casualties
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Three drones targeted the cities of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region early on Sunday, but were intercepted before causing any casualties, according to local media reports.
Reports said two drones entered the airspace over Sulaymaniyah, with one sparking a fire that was later brought under control.
In Erbil, the C-RAM air defense system intercepted and destroyed a drone without causing damage, the reports said.
According to the reports, the attacks came after the withdrawal of U.S., British, French and German forces from Erbil International Airport. The withdrawal, which reportedly took place over 72 hours, included hundreds of troops and key air defense systems.
On Saturday, Kurdish political writer and researcher Kifah Mahmoud told North Press there had been a misunderstanding regarding the U.S. troop withdrawal.
He said the forces now leaving Erbil were the same units that had withdrawn months earlier from Ain al-Asad Air Base in western Iraq and from several other bases in central Baghdad.
