Syria, Iraq hold border security talks to strengthen joint coordination
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – A Syrian Defense Ministry delegation on Monday visited Iraq to discuss strengthening cooperation and coordination on securing the shared border between the two countries.
According to a statement published by the Syrian Defense Ministry on Monday, Brig. Gen. Hassan Abdul Ghani, commander of the Syrian Army’s Border Guard Forces, met with Lt. Gen. Mohammed Abdul Wahab Sukkar, commander of Iraq’s Border Forces under the Interior Ministry, to discuss enhancing border security, combating smuggling, and improving joint coordination.
The Iraqi Interior Ministry said the meeting focused on mechanisms to deepen cooperation between the border forces of both countries and ways to improve intelligence sharing to address security challenges that could affect the stability of the shared border region.
The ministry added that the discussions also explored measures to increase operational coordination and strengthen communication between the two sides.
According to the Iraqi statement, Abdul Ghani said the meeting produced positive outcomes that would help improve border control and establish faster and more flexible communication channels between field commanders on both sides, enhancing joint coordination and supporting the security of both neighboring countries.
