Al-Sharaa appoints final 70 members to complete Syria’s new parliament

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syria’s Higher Committee for People’s Assembly Elections on Wednesday announced the names of the 70 members appointed by Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa to the country’s new legislature, completing the formation of the 210-seat People’s Assembly.

The appointments finalize the composition of Syria’s first parliament since the fall of the al-Assad regime.

The list was unveiled during a press conference held at the People’s Assembly building in Damascus.

Mohammad Taha, head of the Higher Committee for People’s Assembly elections, said the Assembly will convene for its inaugural session next Monday on July 6, when members will take the constitutional oath of office.

Taha said the first legislative term will last 30 months.

He added that the presidential appointments include 55 men and 15 women.

According to the committee, the 70 appointed members are distributed across Syria’s governorates as follows: 14 from Aleppo, seven from Hasakah, six each from Deir ez-Zor and Homs, five each from Idlib, Hama, Damascus, and Rural Damascus, four each from Latakia and Daraa, 3 from Raqqa, and two each from Tartous, Suwayda and Quneitra.
