Syrian FM to visit Beirut to discuss Lebanon stability initiative
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani is expected to pay an official visit to Beirut on Thursday as part of efforts to open a new chapter in Syrian-Lebanese relations and present a Syrian initiative aimed at supporting Lebanon’s internal stability, according to Syrian diplomatic sources cited by local media on Tuesday.
The sources, quoted by Syria TV, said the visit is part of a political move intended to improve bilateral relations while accompanying Lebanon’s current political phase.
According to the sources, al-Shaibani will present a Syrian political initiative focused on supporting the Lebanese state in achieving the exclusive control of weapons by state institutions through a consensual political process.
The initiative seeks to avoid internal confrontation or security divisions in Lebanon and is based on Damascus’ view that the issue should be addressed through dialogue and national understanding rather than measures that could lead to domestic unrest, the sources said.
The visit’s agenda includes meetings with Joseph Aoun, Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, and Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri.
Al-Shaibani is also expected to meet Lebanon’s Grand Mufti Abdel Latif Derian, Bechara Boutros al-Rahi, former Walid Jumblatt, Samir Geagea, and Bahia Hariri.
The meetings are intended to underscore Damascus’ engagement with a broad range of Lebanon’s official, political, and religious figures, according to the diplomatic sources.
