Israel fires artillery into Syria’s Daraa, Damascus calls for international action

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – The Israeli army on Sunday fired three artillery shells at the outskirts of Abidin village in western Daraa countryside, southern Syria.

Local sources told North Press that the shelling originated from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and coincided with the launch of two illumination flares, following two airstrikes carried out by Israeli warplanes.

Earlier the same day, two people were killed and a member of the Syrian Army’s Division 40 was injured after the vehicle they were traveling in was targeted in the city of Tafas, also in western Daraa.

The sources added that Israeli fighter jets remained active over the skies of Daraa and Quneitra governorates during the bombardment.

In response, Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned what it described as Israeli attacks, including military incursions into Syrian territory in the governorates of Daraa and Quneitra and the artillery shelling of the area.

In a statement, the ministry said the incursions, shelling, and the resulting intimidation of civilians constitute a flagrant violation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as a new breach of international law, the United Nations Charter, and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.

The ministry warned that the continuation of these practices undermines efforts to promote security and stability, exacerbates civilian suffering in the affected areas, and risks further escalation and instability across the region.

It also called on the United Nations and the international community to assume their responsibilities by taking the necessary measures to halt the repeated violations and ensure respect for the 1974 Disengagement Agreement in order to safeguard Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
