Syrian authorities arrest former regime network in Idlib

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian authorities announced on Monday the arrest of a group accused of operating intelligence and bombing cells linked to the former Syrian government in Idlib governorate, according to the Ministry of Interior.

Ghassan Bakir, commander of Internal Security in Idlib, said investigations revealed that the detainees had worked as security operatives for the former government, carrying out surveillance and documenting military positions during the Syrian conflict.

According to Bakir, the suspects provided Syrian military aircraft and artillery units with coordinates used to target those locations.

He added that members of the network were also involved in coordinating the entry of car bombs, motorcycle bombs, and explosive devices into the area and participated in carrying out attacks in civilian gatherings.

Bakir stated that the detainees confessed to involvement in several bombings that targeted key locations in Idlib city, including al-Malab Roundabout, al-Sabaa Bahrat Roundabout, and the Forty and Thirty Streets areas, as well as attacks in Jisr al-Shughur city.

The attacks resulted in casualties and spread fear among residents, according to the official.

The commander also said the suspects admitted recruiting additional agents to collect information and facilitating smuggling routes for individuals accused of previous attacks. He further alleged that the network received financial and logistical support, as well as direct instructions, from officers affiliated with the former government’s intelligence agencies.

The Syrian Ministry of Interior did not provide further details regarding the number of detainees or the timing of the arrests.
