QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Two children were injured on Wednesday after a cluster munition left behind from previous fighting exploded while they were herding sheep near the city of Izra in the northern countryside of Daraa, southern Syria.
A local source told North Press that the explosion occurred in agricultural land surrounding Izra, causing moderate injuries and shrapnel wounds to the two children, both under the age of 15.
The source added that the injured children were transferred to Izra National Hospital to receive medical treatment.
North Press correspondent in Daraa reported that more than 100 incidents involving unexploded war remnants have been recorded in the province since the fall of the Assad government.
According to the correspondent, the explosions have resulted in the deaths of 48 people and injuries to more than 100 others.
Unexploded ordnance and landmines continue to pose a serious threat to civilians in several Syrian regions affected by years of conflict.
