Syria, Iraq reopen Tanf border crossing after 11 years

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian and Iraqi authorities announced on Thursday the official reopening of the Tanf–al-Waleed border crossing, marking the resumption of operations after more than 11 years of closure.

The head of Syria’s General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, Qutaiba Badawi, said the move represents a significant step toward enhancing joint cooperation and reactivating transit movement between the two countries.

“We are working to ensure a high level of flow for convoys and to raise the readiness of the crossing in line with current requirements, contributing to supporting trade and energy movement through Syria,” Badawi said.

On the Iraqi side, the Border Ports Authority confirmed the reopening of al-Waleed crossing with Syria, officially restoring operations at the key border point.

The head of Iraq’s Border Ports Authority, Lieutenant General Omar Adnan al-Waeli, inaugurated the joint crossing alongside Syrian officials.

The reopening ceremony was attended by Badawi, Director General of Iraq’s General Customs Authority Thamer Qasim Dawood, as well as several security officials and representatives of agencies operating at border crossings.

The Tanf–al-Waleed crossing, located along a strategic route linking Syria and Iraq, had remained closed since 2013 amid security developments during the Syrian conflict.
