QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian and Lebanese media reported on Tuesday that around 150 Syrian prisoners are set to be transferred from Lebanese prisons to Syrian authorities, as part of ongoing coordination between the two countries.
According to the reports, the detainees have been handed over to Lebanon’s General Security in preparation for their transfer to Syria.
The move comes within efforts led by the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the Ministries of Justice and Interior, aimed at repatriating Syrian prisoners.
Media outlets said that relevant authorities in Jdeidet Yabous, in the Damascus countryside, are making final preparations to receive a group of Syrian inmates currently held in Roumieh prison in Lebanon.
The handover is expected to take place in the near future after completing the necessary logistical and administrative arrangements, amid joint coordination between the concerned authorities in both countries.
The reports indicated that the prisoners to be transferred are those who have served long sentences of 10 years or more, covering various charges except rape and murder. They will have the right to request retrials upon their return to Syria.
