Syria says troop deployment on Lebanon border is defensive
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Defense Ministry said on Saturday that the Syrian army’s military buildup along the border with Lebanon is a precautionary defensive measure and not an offensive action.
Brig. Gen. Hassan Abdulghani, spokesperson for the Syrian Defense Ministry, said the deployment aims to prevent any violations along the border and contribute to stability in both countries.
“The Syrian military mobilization on the border is not an offensive measure,” Abdulghani said, adding that the army’s presence is intended “to control any violations on the ground in a way that enhances stability and serves the interests of both Syria and Lebanon.”
Abdulghani noted that the current stage requires clarity in policy and directives, stressing that Damascus supports the authority of the Lebanese state and its efforts to assert full sovereignty over its territory.
The defense ministry spokesperson also said that Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa “supports this approach and backs the Lebanese army in extending its authority.”
He added that Damascus’ priorities in the coming period focus on growth, reconstruction, and economic recovery.
Abdulghani further stated that “everyone realizes that Hezbollah’s interest lies in escalating tensions in the region,” while denying reports of any ground incursion launched from the Syrian side of the border.
