Syrian government appoints SDF commander Sipan Hamo deputy Defense Minister

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced on Tuesday the appointment of Sipan Hamo, a senior commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), as deputy defense minister for the eastern region of the country.

The ministry’s Communications and Media Department official, Asim Ghlion, confirmed the appointment, describing it as part of the implementation of the integration agreement signed between the SDF and the Syrian government on January 29.

Sipan Hamo currently serves as the general commander of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and is a member of the SDF General Command. He hails from the city of Afrin in Aleppo countryside.

The integration agreement aims to coordinate defense and security arrangements between the Syrian government forces and the SDF in northeastern and eastern Syria, where the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) administers civil governance and the SDF maintains security.

This appointment marks a continuation of recent steps to formalize cooperation between local forces and Damascus, focusing on administrative and military coordination in the eastern region.
