Two injured in clashes between gov’t, National Guard in Suwayda
Suwayda, Syria (North Press) – Two civilians were seriously injured on Friday night during clashes between Syrian government forces and fighters affiliated with the National Guard Forces in Syria’s southern governorate of Suwayda.
Local sources told North Press that government forces targeted the outskirts of Suwayda city and several residential neighborhoods with mortar shells.
In response, fighters of National Guard – a local armed group – returned fire toward the sources of the shelling, leading to hours of exchanges using heavy machine guns.
During the fighting, a rocket-propelled shell struck a house belonging to a local resident in the village of Ariqa west of Suwayda city, the sources said.
The shell partially destroyed the house and left a man and his wife seriously injured.
The two were reportedly transferred for medical treatment, while the clashes continued intermittently in surrounding areas.
Several parts of Suwayda have witnessed rising security tensions in recent days, amid recurring confrontations between government forces and local armed groups.
The governorate, predominantly inhabited by Druze communities, has experienced frequent unrest and armed incidents over the past months as local factions and government-affiliated forces compete for influence and control.
