Kobani political parties demand cancellation of district director appointment

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Political parties and forces in the northern Syrian city of Kobani issued a joint statement on Wednesday demanding the cancellation of a decision by the Aleppo Governorate to appoint a new director for the Kobani district, insisting the role be filled by a local resident who represents all community components.

The statement comes a day after the appointment of Ibrahim Muslim as the new District Director for Kobani by the Aleppo Governorate.

In their joint statement, ten political parties expressed their opposition to the decision. “The street in Kobani was surprised by the issuance of a decision to appoint a person who does not represent the region and is from outside it as its director,” the statement read.

The parties emphasized “the necessity that the district director be one of its sons who lived in it and contributed to its construction and protection.” They affirmed that “the Kurdish issue is a just national issue, and that the attainment of rights is a fundamental pillar for the stability of Syria and not a threat to its unity.”

The statement continued by highlighting the city’s history of sacrifice. “We, the people of Kobani, made great sacrifices to liberate Kobani and Syria from the clutches of terrorist organizations and to preserve civil peace within a homeland characterized by freedom, democracy, and social justice, and after the fall of the dictatorial government and the defunct regime.”

The political factions grounded their demand in the broader national context, referencing recent agreements. “Based on the agreement signed between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the government on the 29th of January to transition to a new phase and the integration of all components within a democratic, pluralistic, decentralized Syria, the Kurdish issue is a matter of national justice and the rights of Kurds are part of the stability of Syria.”

The political parties in Kobani stressed the necessity of rescinding the current appointment. They called for ensuring that whoever administers the Kobani district is one of its native sons who has lived in and contributed to its development, and is a true representative of all community segments in the city.
