Families of missing detainees rally in Syria’s Qamishli demanding information on their fate

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Families of missing persons and detainees held by the Syrian government staged on Wednesday a protest in Qamishli city, northeastern Syria, calling for information about the fate of their relatives.

Protesters carried banners urging the Syrian transitional government and international organizations to intervene immediately to address the detainees’ file and secure their release.

Layla Taher, the mother of a missing man, told North Press that her son is detained in Deir Hafer. “I want my voice to reach President Ahmad al-Sharaa and release our sons,” she said.

“We can no longer endure this. We are exhausted and overwhelmed,” she added. “We are living through the holy month of Ramadan, yet we cannot live our normal lives.”

Handadi Kamel, another mother of a missing detainee, called for the swift implementation of the clause concerning detainees in the agreement reached between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

“My son, Assam Ahmad al-Naser, was a fighter in Deir Hafer,” she told North Press. “I have had no information about him for more than a month.”

She questioned why the detainees’ provision remains unimplemented despite progress on other aspects of the agreement.

The families urged the United Nations and international organizations to intervene and find a prompt solution to the issue of missing persons and detainees.
