QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Thursday that US forces departed al-Tanf base in southern Syria on Wednesday, February 11, describing the move as part of a “deliberate and conditions-based” transition carried out by the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve.
In a statement, CENTCOM said the withdrawal followed a structured process aimed at adjusting the US military posture in Syria while maintaining the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS). The announcement came hours after the Syrian Ministry of Defense said army units had taken control of the al-Tanf military base and secured the facility and its surroundings.
Admiral Brad Cooper, Commander of US Central Command, said in the statement, “US forces remain prepared to respond to any threats that may arise from ISIS in the region, as part of our support to partner-led efforts to prevent the resurgence of this terrorist network.”
He added, “Sustained pressure on ISIS remains critical to protecting the United States and enhancing regional security.”
According to CENTCOM, over the past two months US forces conducted strikes against more than 100 targets using over 350 precision munitions. The operations resulted in the capture or killing of more than 50 ISIS members, the statement said.
