Burning of oil wells raises concern in Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Unknown gunmen on Saturday set fire to several oil wells in the Deir ez-Zor desert, eastern Syria, for the second consecutive day, in a new incident affecting the al-Azba town and Tayyeb al-Fal village, amid unclear motives.
Local sources told North Press that deliberate fires broke out at oil wells in both areas, causing material damage, with no reports of human casualties.
No official statements have yet been issued identifying those responsible or explaining the reasons behind the incident.
However, local sources suggested—without official confirmation—that former investors may be behind the arson, following the wells’ confiscation by the Syrian state.
These incidents come amid ongoing security tensions in various parts of the Deir ez-Zor desert, alongside calls to intensify security measures to protect vital facilities.
