French FM to discuss SDF–government agreement with Mazloum Abdi in Erbil
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said on Thursday that he would meet with Commander in Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mazloum Abdi in Erbil later today to discuss the agreement with the Syrian transitional government, praising the deal as one that will strengthen the fundamental rights of the Kurds.
Earlier on Thursday, Barrot arrived in Damascus at the start of a regional tour of the Middle East aimed at discussing recent developments in northeastern Syria.
The French foreign minister stressed that the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) remains a top priority for Paris, noting that the agreement between the Syrian transitional government and the SDF reinforces international efforts to combat the group.
He added that France would provide all necessary support to Syrians to ensure the government can continue its work.
France stands alongside the Syrian people, who now have an opportunity to build a new future, Barrot said.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) quoted a diplomatic source as saying that during his visit, the French foreign minister will also address counterterrorism issues and the repercussions of the ongoing escalation between the United States and Iran.
