European, U.S. welcome Syria–SDF agreement
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The European Union welcomed on Friday the agreement reached between the Syrian transitional government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), expressing its full readiness to support the implementation of the agreement.
EU spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Anouar El Anouni said in a statement published on the EU’s website that a “full cessation of hostilities is needed to enable the provision of humanitarian aid, the protection of civilians and the return of internally displaced persons.”
He added that stability in northeast Syria is crucial for the success of a comprehensive political transition in the country and for safeguarding the rights of the Syrian people.
In Washington, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen described the announcement between Damascus and the SDF leadership as “a critical step.”
Shaheen said that achieving a unified Syria that protects all its people requires sustained dialogue from both sides, adding that she would closely monitor the implementation of the agreement. She also thanked those involved for their efforts.
Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs also welcomed the agreement, saying in a statement posted on X that it provides an important framework for a ceasefire and for advancing a comprehensive political transition, while encouraging continued efforts to build a state for all Syrians.
Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel likewise welcomed the deal, saying that a lasting ceasefire—alongside commitments related to integration, the rights of Syrian Kurds, and the return of displaced persons—represents an important step toward a stable and unified Syria.
