QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The United States and the European Union welcomed on Tuesday the extension of a ceasefire agreement in northeastern Syria, stressing the need to protect civilians, ensure humanitarian access, and maintain stability in the region, according to a joint statement.
In the statement, Washington and Brussels said they “welcome the extension of the ceasefire agreement in northeast Syria and stress the importance of full compliance with the protection of civilians in all areas.”
They underlined that “all parties must adhere to international humanitarian law and facilitate the establishment of safe humanitarian corridors to ensure the delivery of assistance to civilians without obstruction.”
The joint statement reaffirmed US and EU support for “a comprehensive and inclusive political transition process in Syria that guarantees the rights of all citizens and contributes to long-term stability and security.”
It added that stability in northeastern Syria through peaceful means remains “a top priority in order to prevent the resurgence of terrorist organizations and to strengthen regional security.”
The statement also emphasized “the importance of maintaining humanitarian corridors and restoring basic services, particularly in the city of Kobani, to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of the population.”
