Kurdish National Council calls for ceasefire and dialogue with Syrian authorities

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Kurdish National Council (KNC) in Syria on Sunday called on the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to immediately halt all military operations and engage in dialogue to address outstanding issues, emphasizing steps toward a stable and inclusive future for Syria.

In an official statement published on its website, the KNC said its appeal is “based on our national and political responsibilities toward the Kurdish people and all Syrian communities, aiming to strengthen stability, civil peace, and the foundation of a state built on partnership and national dialogue.”

The Council highlighted that it has actively worked through political channels to reduce tensions and prevent escalation into broader military confrontations. It further expressed support for the efforts of Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani, describing them as “a key entry point to defuse tensions and a real opportunity to revive the political process and prioritize dialogue as the only way to resolve differing issues.”

Emphasizing the long-term nature of the Kurdish issue, the KNC stated that it is “a national matter rooted in the formation of the Syrian state and represents an essential right for a people living on their land, forming an integral part of Syria’s national political process.” It noted that resolving Kurdish matters requires constitutional guarantees and explicit political recognition within a unified national framework.

The statement underscored the Council’s continued engagement with all relevant parties to stabilize the current calm, ensure adherence to agreements, and create conditions conducive to meaningful dialogue.

The KNC also called for lifting the blockade and all restrictions on Kobani, facilitating humanitarian aid deliveries and ensuring unrestricted civilian movement. It described Presidential Decree No. 13 as an initial positive step that could be further developed into a constitutional framework reinforcing partnership and equal citizenship.

Highlighting humanitarian priorities, the Council stressed that the safe return of displaced persons and refugees remains urgent and requires proper guarantees. In closing, the KNC urged all Syrian national forces to seize the opportunity to build a decentralized, democratic state that safeguards the rights of all communities.
