Turkey’s DEM Party urges halt to attacks on Kurdish areas in Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Turkish pro-Kurdish Equality and Democracy of Peoples Party (DEM Party) on Thursday called on Thursday for an end to military attacks on Kurdish-populated areas in northern Syria, during a press conference held in Qamishli, according to a statement attended by North Press.

In its statement, the party said its delegation’s visit aimed to express solidarity with local communities affected by ongoing hostilities.

“Our goal in this visit is to support the Kurdish cities. We regret the war taking place here in the region and we hope it will end as soon as possible,” the statement read.

The party added that Syria had witnessed mass killings in the past year and warned of a similar pattern re-emerging in the north of the country.

“Last year, Syria saw major massacres, and today we also see the scenario being repeated in northern Syria. Syria is a country rich in religions, peoples, sects, and cultures, and we hope that all of them can live in equality and brotherhood,” the statement said.

The DEM Party described the current stage as “extremely dangerous,” citing the continuation of armed confrontations and the lack of effective international intervention.

“Today we are going through a phase of war and fighting, and this is a very dangerous stage. Unfortunately, we see foreign countries watching without intervening or doing anything,” it said.

The party also referred to the local administration in northeast Syria, noting its stated preference for dialogue and de-escalation.

“The administration of the region does not want war at all. It is currently carrying out efforts for peace and for organizing a democratic system. It wants reconciliation, brotherhood, and equality among peoples, and it wants dialogue,” the statement said.

According to the party, the Autonomous Administration is engaged in talks aimed at ending hostilities and encouraging the laying down of weapons.

“They do not want a war to happen in Syria between Arabs and Kurds. They are seeking peace and reconciliation,” the statement added.

The DEM Party further called on the Syrian government to halt military operations in northern Syrian cities, urging an end to attacks that continue to affect civilians and public life across the region.
