Military escalation displaces civilians from Raqqa toward Qamishli – MSF

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières, MSF) said on Thursday that the military escalation in northern and eastern Syria has once again exposed civilians to insecurity, forcing them to flee their homes.

MSF stated that the escalation has driven civilians from Tabqa, Raqqa, Hasakah, and other parts of Syria toward Qamishli and Derik (al-Malikiyah).

The organization noted that its teams witnessed convoys of overcrowded vehicles traveling along the Hasakah–Qamishli road amid continuous heavy rainfall, which forced many to pull over on the roadside.

In its assessment of the situation, MSF said that temporary shelters in Qamishli and Derik—mostly schools and mosques—have poor infrastructure and are not adequately equipped to accommodate displaced people.

MSF added that its teams have begun distributing mattresses, blankets, hygiene kits, food items, and kitchen supplies in three temporary shelters in Derik and Qamishli, in addition to operating a mobile clinic in Derik.

On Wednesday, Kurdish civil society organizations and activists called on the international community, the United Nations, humanitarian organizations, and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to take immediate and urgent action to halt the humanitarian deterioration in Syria’s Kurdish regions.
