Woman, child injured by war remnants mine blast in Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – A woman and her child were injured on Wednesday when a landmine left over from the war exploded in a town east of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.

A local source from the town of Khsham in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor told North Press that Hasna al-Saleh, 38, and her child were wounded after a mine detonated while she was collecting firewood from agricultural land near her house on the outskirts of the town.

The source said that al-Saleh and her child were immediately transferred to hospitals in Deir ez-Zor for treatment, noting—citing a medical source—that their condition is stable.

Khsham remains heavily contaminated with unexploded ordnance and remnants of war, as it had previously been under the control of Iranian-backed militias before the fall of the former regime.

To this day, many residents continue to refuse to return to the town due to fears of landmines, the source added.
