Landmine blast kills young man, injures child in Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – A young man was killed and a child injured on Monday when a landmine left over from the war exploded in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.
A local source from the village of al-Hejjnah, east of Deir ez-Zor, told North Press that the landmine detonated on the outskirts of the village’s desert area earlier in the day, as a shepherd was attempting to set up a tent to stay in the area.
The source said the explosion killed 23-year-old Qutaiba al-Sarrah and injured his nephew, who was struck by shrapnel. Several heads of livestock were also killed in the blast.
The source noted that the village periodically witnesses similar incidents, despite repeated security warnings against entering uninhabited areas. “Many people do not heed these warnings,” the source added.
