Explosion inside mosque in Homs kills eight, injures 21
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – An explosive device detonated on Friday inside the Imam Ali bin Abi Talib Mosque in the Wadi al-Dhahab neighborhood of Homs, killing at least eight people and wounding 21 others, according to initial figures provided to North Press.
A source from the Syrian Internal Security forces told North Press that the device exploded inside the mosque, prompting security units to immediately cordon off the area. Emergency and investigation teams were dispatched to the site to secure the location and begin collecting evidence to determine the circumstances of the blast.
Medical sources said the injured were transported to nearby hospitals, noting that several cases remain in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll could increase. Hospitals in Homs were placed on alert following the incident to receive additional casualties if needed.
Security authorities stated that no clear information is yet available regarding the party responsible for planting the explosive device. They emphasized that investigations are ongoing to identify and pursue those involved in the attack.
In a statement relayed by local media, security officials said the objective of the bombing was to “incite discord in Homs province,” calling on residents and media outlets to refrain from spreading rumors and to rely on official information as it becomes available.
No group has claimed responsibility for the explosion at the time of publication, and authorities did not announce any arrests related to the incident.
