U.S. State Sec. marks Syria transition anniversary, praises reform efforts

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio marked on Tuesday the first anniversary of Syria’s political transition, praising what he described as “significant steps” taken by the new government and the Syrian people since the ousting of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad last year.

In a statement posted on X, Rubio said Syrians had “turned a new page” in their history and commended both domestic institutions and international partners for supporting ongoing reforms.

He emphasized Washington’s continued commitment to “a peaceful, prosperous Syria that includes its minorities and is at peace with all its neighbors.”

Rubio also highlighted what he called the resilience of Syrian communities navigating political restructuring, economic hardship, and the early stages of national reconciliation.

Rubio’s remarks come as Western governments continue to condition deeper engagement on human rights improvements, anti-corruption efforts, and progress toward inclusive governance under the transitional authorities.

Dec. 8, 2025 marked the first anniversary of the fall of the Assad regime, celebrated in several Syrian cities including Damascus and Aleppo. The transition—supported by the U.S., European countries, and regional partners—remains fragile, with security challenges, competing political visions, and the slow pace of institutional change shaping the landscape.
