DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Swedish Ministry of Defense issued on Wednesday a stern warning to Moscow, threatening to shoot down Russian fighter jets if they violate Swedish airspace.
Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson declared, “Sweden will defend its airspace.”
This warning came shortly after Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski cautioned that Moscow should not complain to the United Nations if its aircraft are downed after crossing into NATO airspace.
On Tuesday, NATO held Russia responsible for what it described as “escalatory” actions that put civilian and military lives at risk.
The latest tensions follow Estonia’s announcement on Sep. 19, that three Russian military aircraft entered its airspace without authorization.
The Russian Ministry of Defense, however, denied the allegations, insisting that its jets were conducting scheduled flight operations in full compliance with international airspace regulations, without violating the borders of other states.
