Israeli Druze leader says Netanyahu made commitments on Syrian Druze
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Muwaffaq Tarif, the spiritual leader of the Druze community in Israel, said on Sunday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had given him clear commitments concerning the future of the Druze in Syria.
Earlier the same day, Netanyahu stated that negotiations with Syria’s transitional government had made progress, though he stressed that “a deal with Damascus remains far from reach.”
In an interview with i24NEWS, Tarif said the anticipated agreement with Damascus is expected to include a clause on demilitarization in southern Syria and guarantees for the security of the Druze community there.
He added that the issue of kidnapped Druze was raised during his discussions with Netanyahu. However, he noted that the Israeli Prime Minister refused to make any commitments on this matter or provide further details.
