Syria’s president to lead delegation at Russia-Arab summit in Moscow

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Embassy in Moscow announced on Wednesday that President Ahmad al-Sharaa will head his country’s delegation to the upcoming Russia-Arab Summit, scheduled to take place in the Russian capital on October 15.

The summit, the first of its kind, will bring together representatives from Arab states across the Middle East and North Africa, along with member countries of the Arab League from East Africa. According to Russian officials, the gathering aims to expand dialogue and strengthen political and economic cooperation between Moscow and the Arab world.

Earlier, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia had extended an official invitation to the Syrian government to participate in the summit. He said the event would serve as “a significant platform for enhancing joint efforts between Russia and Arab partners.”

In a statement, the Syrian Embassy in Moscow noted, “As announced yesterday during the joint press conference of Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani in Damascus, Syria will participate in the upcoming Russia-Arab Summit, with President Ahmad al-Sharaa leading the delegation.”

The announcement underscores the growing diplomatic engagement between Damascus and Moscow. Russia has been a key ally of the  former Syrian government throughout the years of conflict and has provided consistent political, economic, and military backing.

The October summit is expected to address a wide range of regional issues, including security cooperation, trade, and energy. Delegations from across the Arab League are anticipated to attend, reflecting an effort to deepen ties between Russia and the Arab world at a time of shifting international alignments.

The summit’s agenda has not yet been formally released, but officials in both Moscow and Damascus have emphasized its importance for enhancing cooperation on political, economic, and security levels.

The Syrian Embassy confirmed that final preparations for the country’s delegation are underway ahead of the Moscow meeting.
