Paris hails publication of UN report on Syria civilian violations
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – France on Tuesday welcomed the publication of a report by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria regarding violations committed against civilians in the country’s coastal region earlier this year.
The report, issued on August 11, documented abuses against civilians in Syria’s coast and central-western regions between January and March 2025. It was submitted to Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa for referral to judicial authorities.
In an official statement published on its website, the French Foreign Ministry said, “France welcomes the publication of the report of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, released on August 11, regarding violations against civilians in the Syrian coast and central-western Syria between January and March 2025.”
The ministry added that the findings represent “an important step in uncovering the circumstances of these acts of violence and in ensuring justice.” It stressed that the recommendations outlined in the report must be fully implemented.
Paris urged the Syrian transitional government to uphold its commitments by cooperating with the commission and the wider international community. The statement underlined the importance of granting investigators unrestricted access to affected areas and adhering to the latest Human Rights Council resolution, which unanimously renewed the commission’s mandate.
The French Foreign Ministry also noted that Syria’s political transition cannot succeed unless it is inclusive and grounded in respect for human rights and the rule of law.
The statement concluded by reaffirming France’s commitment to supporting Syrians in their fight against impunity. It pledged continued backing for the work of the United Nations and Syrian civil society organizations and expressed readiness to assist in strengthening the capacity of Syrian judicial institutions.
