U.S. congressman urges lifting export controls on Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – A U.S. Congressman has called on his country’s administration to remove export restrictions on Syria, urging swift action to implement a recent presidential order aimed at easing economic barriers.

Republican Representative Joe Wilson made the appeal on Monday, writing on the social media platform X: “I encourage the U.S. Department of Commerce and its Bureau of Industry and Security to move quickly to implement President Donald Trump’s executive order and lift export controls imposed on Syria.”

In May this year, President Trump announced the lifting of U.S. sanctions on Syria, framing the move as an opportunity for the country to “prosper after years of war and international isolation.” The announcement marked a significant policy shift after more than a decade of comprehensive U.S. restrictions, including measures targeting Syria’s industrial, financial, and trade sectors.

Wilson emphasized that “President Trump’s vision is clear and should not be delayed any longer,” signaling support for expanding Syria’s access to foreign goods and technologies under the revised U.S. policy.

Economic conditions in Syria remain strained despite recent policy changes. Large parts of the country’s north and east are governed by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), whose institutions operate under challenging economic circumstances shaped by years of conflict, displacement, and infrastructure damage. Local authorities have repeatedly stressed the importance of stable trade channels and access to industrial materials for rebuilding essential services in the region.
