Barak comments on launch of investment projects in Syria

Damascus, Syria (North Press)– U.S. Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barak on Wednesday welcomed the launch of a series of large-scale investment projects in Damascus valued at $14 billion, describing them as steps toward “security, stability, and prosperity.”

Earlier in the day, Syria’s Investment Authority, in the presence of Syrian President Ahmad al-Shar’a, announced 12 strategic projects across multiple sectors, including infrastructure, energy, and transport. The projects were unveiled during a ceremony in Damascus attended by regional business leaders and foreign partners.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Barak said “I was pleased to attend today’s signing ceremony in Damascus. Syria’s recovery must begin with gradual steps building security and stability, followed by effective governance, and ultimately fostering initiative and prosperity.”

According to Barak, regional partners involved in the projects include Qatar’s UCC company, along with Turkey’s Cengiz and Kalyon groups, which secured the contract to build, operate, and later transfer management of a new Damascus International Airport.

The envoy also referred to the lifting of certain U.S. sanctions by President Donald Trump, describing the move as part of efforts to enable foreign investment in Syria’s reconstruction process.
