U.S. Congressman highlights role of SDF in Syria’s future
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Congressman Abraham Hamadeh emphasized on Sunday the critical role of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in shaping Syria’s future, noting that the group—comprised of over 100,000 Arab and Kurdish fighters—has been trained and supported by the U.S.-led Global Coalition.
His remarks came during a video call with SDF Commander in Chief Mazloum Abdi and SDF leader Rohlat Afrin.
“With over 100,000 fighters – both Arabs and Kurds – trained by US-led coalition forces, the SDF is a key part of Syria’s future,” Hamadeh said in a post on X. “For over a decade, it has protected the northeast third of Syria, and established a decentralized model that protects Christians, Arabs, Kurds, and others.”
He added that negotiations between the SDF and Damascus are expected to resume in Paris later this month, with backing from the Trump administration.
Hamadeh affirmed that the United States remains committed to maintaining open channels of communication with all Syrian parties.
He also extended his appreciation to Mazloum Abdi and the transitional government in Damascus for their continued cooperation in the search for the remains of Kayla Mueller, an American aid worker who was kidnapped by ISIS in Aleppo in 2013. ISIS later claimed Mueller was killed in a Jordanian airstrike on Raqqa, which was then the group’s de facto capital in Syria.
While Washington later confirmed her death, U.S. officials expressed doubts about the accuracy of ISIS’s account.
