Suwayda events probe committee convenes for first meeting
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syria’s Ministry of Justice on Saturday convened the first meeting of a newly formed committee tasked with investigating the recent events in the southern city of Suwayda, amid growing calls for accountability and regional stability.
The meeting, chaired by Minister of Justice Mazhar al-Weiss, marked the official launch of the committee’s operations. Al-Weiss emphasized the importance of adhering to principles of justice and fairness to “redress those affected, reinforce civil peace, and restore stability” in Suwayda, a predominantly Druze city that has seen periodic unrest over the past years.
During the inaugural session, committee members unanimously selected Judge Hatem al-Nassan as the committee’s chair, and attorney Ammar Ezz al-Din as its official spokesperson. The Ministry of Justice also allocated a permanent headquarters for the committee within its main building in Damascus.
In a gesture aimed at fostering public participation, the committee announced the activation of two phone lines to receive complaints directly from residents of Suwayda. These lines will operate under the supervision of Judge Maysoon al-Tawil and attorney Ezz al-Din.
Judge al-Nassan stated that the investigative process would begin immediately, starting with consultations involving local officials in Suwayda and Daraa, as well as affected residents. He noted that specialized teams would conduct fieldwork “to uncover the full truth and identify those responsible for the recent disturbances.”
