Turkey launches Azerbaijani gas exports to Syria via Kilis–Aleppo pipeline
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Turkey began on Saturday exporting Azerbaijani natural gas to Syria via the Kilis–Aleppo pipeline.
The pipeline has a daily capacity of six million cubic meters, with the potential to deliver up to two billion cubic meters annually.
The imported gas will primarily be used at the natural gas power plant in Aleppo, where it will be converted into approximately 1,200 megawatts of electricity.
Turkish Minister of Energy, Selçuk Bayraktar, noted that electricity is currently being exported to Syria through eight different connection points. “We expect to first increase our export capacity by 25 percent, and eventually more than double it,” he said.
Bayraktar also confirmed that the annual gas export volume to Syria could meet the electricity needs of up to 5 million households.
Meanwhile, Director of the Syrian Gas Company, Youssef al-Youssef, told Syria TV that gas pumping began on Saturday at an initial volume of 745,000 cubic meters.
He stated that volumes will increase progressively throughout the coming week.
“The gas flow will enhance the stability of Syria’s electrical grid,” al-Youssef explained. “We plan to gradually scale up deliveries to 3.4 million cubic meters within seven days.”
On Friday, U.S. Special Envoy for Syria, Thomas Barrack, praised Qatar’s full financial support for the project.
