U.S. envoy urges warring Syrian factions to cease fire, end violence
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, on Sunday called on all warring factions in Syria to immediately lay down their arms, cease hostilities, and abandon the cycle of tribal revenge.
His statement comes amid renewed clashes in Syria’s southern governorate of Suwayda on Saturday, despite the Syrian presidency’s announcement of a nationwide ceasefire.
“Syria stands at a critical juncture—peace and dialogue must prevail—and prevail now,” Barrack said in a post on X.
He described U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Syria as “a principled step,” one that offered the Syrian people “a chance to move beyond years of unimaginable suffering and atrocities.”
Barrack added that the international community, which had cautiously supported Syria’s emerging government, viewed the move as a hopeful opening toward a future beyond conflict.
“Yet, this fragile ambition is now overshadowed by profound shock, as brutal acts by warring factions on the ground undermine the government’s authority and disrupt any semblance of order,” he noted.
