UN reports widespread rights violations in Syria’s Suwayda
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations Office for Human Rights revealed on Friday credible reports of widespread human rights violations in the southern Syrian city of Suwayda.
The violations included executions allegedly carried out by Syrian security forces and other armed actors, including members of the Druze and Bedouin communities.
In response, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNCHR) Volker Turk urged Syrian authorities to ensure justice and accountability for the killings and abuses reported in Suwayda.
“This bloodshed and the violence must stop, and the protection of all people must be the utmost priority, in line with international human rights law,” Turk said in a statement.
He stressed the urgent need for independent, prompt, and transparent investigations into all acts of violence and for those responsible to be held accountable.
Suwayda has witnessed a significant surge in violence over the past several days, resulting in the killing of approximately 600 people, according to recent reports.
