Government forces withdraw from Syria’s Suwayda as ceasefire takes effect
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Field sources informed North Press on Thursday that the forces of the Syrian transitional government have completed their withdrawal from the city of Suwayda in southern Syria, coinciding with the start of a ceasefire in the governorate.
According to the sources, armed Druze factions have begun combing the city’s neighborhoods with corpses still lying in the streets. They reported widespread looting of homes and shops, along with a total power outage that has persisted for days.
The government forces’ withdrawal follows an agreement reached between the Syrian government and the city’s Druze leaders. This comes after days of intense clashes that erupted last Sunday between government forces and local Druze armed factions, leaving more than 300 people dead or wounded.
Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes launched multiple airstrikes on Wednesday targeting military sites in Damascus, Suwayda, and Daraa, amid the ongoing escalation in southern Syria.
