Druze call for restoration of state authority in Syria’s Suwayda
SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – The spiritual leadership of the Druze community called on Tuesday the Syrian state to reassert its authority in Suwayda Governorate, southern Syria, through official institutions, particularly security and military bodies, in the wake of recent deadly clashes.
In an official statement in Arabic, the leadership said, “In light of the tragic events that have recently unfolded in Suwayda Governorate, resulting in numerous casualties, and in response to the urgent need to stop the bloodshed and restore stability, we stress the importance of the state extending its authority through its legitimate institutions, particularly the security and military apparatus.”
The statement welcomed the deployment of forces from the Ministries of Interior and Defense to restore order, take control of security centers, and stabilize the region.
The leadership also called on all armed factions in Suwayda to fully cooperate with the Interior Ministry forces, refrain from obstructing their operations, and hand over their weapons to the appropriate authorities.
In addition, the statement urged the initiation of dialogue with the Syrian transitional government to address the aftermath of the violence and to work jointly with qualified local residents to revitalize state institutions in the governorate.
The spiritual leadership underscored the importance of national unity, placing the public interest above all, and fostering cooperation among all parties to end the bloodshed and guide Suwayda toward peace and lasting stability.
Suwayda has witnessed intense clashes over the past two days between Druze armed groups and tribal factions from rural areas of Daraa and Suwayda, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries.
