HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – The Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), General Mazloum Abdi, extended his greetings on Thursday to Kurds in Syria and across the world on the occasion of Nowruz 2025, a festival symbolizing renewal and resistance.
In a statement published on his official channels, Abdi addressed SDF fighters, security forces, and families of those who lost their lives in the struggle for regional stability. “Once again, we extend our warmest congratulations to the fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces, the Asayish, and the Self-Defense Forces, as well as the families of the martyrs, on the occasion of Nowruz,” he said.
Abdi highlighted the significance of this year’s Nowruz celebrations as a symbol of unity among Kurdish forces, reinforcing calls for cooperation amid ongoing regional challenges. He stressed that Kurdish factions must remain united to protect the progress achieved in northeast Syria, where the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has established a self-governing system based on pluralism and decentralized governance.
Beyond the Kurdish community, Abdi acknowledged the role of all ethnic and religious groups in the region, emphasizing that their contributions are vital to shaping Syria’s future. “All components of Syria—Arabs, Kurds, Syriacs, Turkmens, Assyrians, and Armenians—will preserve their achievements and secure their rightful place in the new Syria,” he added.
Nowruz, traditionally celebrated as the Kurdish New Year, carries deep historical and cultural significance, particularly in times of struggle. In northeast Syria, the festival has long been associated with resistance against oppression and the reaffirmation of identity.
As celebrations take place across AANES-governed areas, Abdi’s message reflects broader aspirations for political recognition and stability in Syria. The region continues to navigate complex dynamics, including security challenges and diplomatic negotiations, making unity among its communities a key priority.
With Nowruz symbolizing a new beginning, Abdi’s remarks serve as a reaffirmation of the SDF’s role in safeguarding the region’s security and self-governance. As festivities unfold, the focus remains on strengthening cooperation among all groups striving for a peaceful and inclusive future in Syria.
