Syria Closes Roads to Coastal Areas Amid Security Reinforcements

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syria’s Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday the closure of all roads leading to the coastal region following the recent military operations aimed at reclaiming areas affected by clashes with remnants of the former regime.

A senior official from the Public Security Directorate, part of the Ministry of Interior, stated that significant quantities of stolen goods were recovered in areas where instability had led to widespread looting.

According to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the official explained, “Due to the instability caused by the actions of the remnants of the former regime, theft and looting surged across several coastal areas.”

He further revealed that more than 200 stolen vehicles had been confiscated in and around Jableh, a city in Latakia province, where opportunistic criminals took advantage of the unrest. “A significant number of those responsible for these thefts have been apprehended, and the stolen vehicles will be returned to their rightful owners through proper legal channels,” he added.

A source within the Ministry of Defense, also speaking to SANA, confirmed that the road closures were implemented as a security measure. “With most areas now under government control, the Ministry of Defense, in coordination with the Public Security Directorate, has decided to close access routes to the coast to curb illegal activities and ensure the gradual return of stability,” the source stated.

The Ministry of Defense had previously established an emergency committee tasked with monitoring violations committed during the recent military and security operations. “Anyone who exceeded the leadership’s directives during the operation will be referred to a military tribunal,” the ministry source added.

Meanwhile, security sources speaking to North Press on condition of anonymity reported the discovery of charred bodies belonging to Public Security personnel near the Hmeimim Bridge. The victims were allegedly detained by remnants of the former Assad regime before being executed.

The latest developments underscore ongoing tensions in Syria, particularly in the western coastal regions, which have historically remained strongholds of the central government. The security situation in Latakia and its surroundings has deteriorated in recent weeks as forces loyal to the Syrian government clashed with elements accused of supporting the former regime’s remnants.

The closures of major roads leading to Latakia, Tartus, and surrounding areas suggest a broader attempt by the Syrian government to consolidate control and prevent further instability. The government’s swift security response highlights concerns over potential insurgent activities and lingering threats from armed groups opposed to the current administration.

While the Syrian government claims to have restored order in most affected areas, the full extent of the situation remains unclear. The response from opposition groups and the broader geopolitical implications of these developments are yet to unfold.
