Clashes in Syria’s Daraa cause 10 casualties
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – At least ten people, including General Security personnel, were killed or injured as violent clashes entered their second day in the city of Sanamayn in the countryside of Daraa, southern Syria.
A local source told North Press that security tensions remain high due to ongoing fighting between General Security forces and an armed group led by Mohsen Al-Haymad. The clashes erupted following the killing of three of al-Haymad’s fighters on March 4.
The confrontation has escalated significantly, with both sides deploying heavy weaponry, including tanks. Al-Haymad’s group has reportedly fortified itself within residential homes.
According to the source, the armed group is based in the city’s western neighborhood and previously had ties to the Military Security Branch of the former regime. The group is also known for its connections to the Islamic State (ISIS).
General Security forces had reportedly given al-Haymad a one-hour ultimatum to negotiate and surrender on Wednesday, but he refused, reigniting the clashes.
During a temporary pause in fighting for negotiations, dozens of families managed to flee the western neighborhood to safer areas.
The clashes have so far resulted in the deaths of four General Security personnel, one civilian, and the injury of five civilians, including children. The number of casualties within al-Haymad’s group remains unknown.
Meanwhile, General Security forces have reportedly captured 20 militants from a-Haymad’s group during overnight battles.
