Syrian Army Claims Killing Hundreds of Turkey-backed Opposition Militants

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced Wednesday that its forces have killed approximately 300 fighters from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front) and Turkish-backed factions in northwest Syria. This comes as HTS-led factions reportedly advance toward key areas, including Hama city.

Ministry Statement

According to a military source, the Syrian Armed Forces:

Operations: Engaged in fierce battles against HTS and allied groups along northern Hama frontlines.

Targeting: Deployed artillery, missile strikes, and joint Syrian-Russian airstrikes to neutralize militant positions.

Results: Over 300 opposition fighters killed, including foreign nationals, and more than 25 drones destroyed.

Opposition Response

In contrast, opposition platforms reported:

Advances: HTS and aligned factions are gaining ground toward Hama and have also made progress near Salamiyah.

Operations: “Red Bands,” an elite HTS unit, executed a tactical assault on the Khatab axis, reportedly killing over 50 government troops.

Context

On November 26, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham HTS, once known al-Nusra Front, and the SNA launched a ground incursion, capturing Idlib, Aleppo, and parts of Hama’s countryside.

The fighting marks one of the most significant escalations in northern Syria since recent ceasefire agreements. Both sides report high casualties, with no signs of de-escalation.

As the clashes continue, the region braces for further instability, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Idlib and its surrounding areas.
